Singapore Zoo HistorySingapore Zoo
The origin of the Singapore zoo dates back to 1969, year in which it was conceived, although it was not until 1970 when the necessary personnel were hired so that, in 1971, the basic enclosures of the park were built. Meanwhile, the animals were supplied by various merchants or donated by sponsors.
Finally, and after the Singapore government made an investment of $ 9 million, The zoo opened its doors on June 27, 1973. At that time it already had more than 270 animals belonging to more than 70 different species, which were housed in an environment that tried to conceive as natural as possible.
In 1987, the Singapore zoo began exhibiting exotic species lent by other zoos, such as the golden chara-nosed monkeys from China. These were followed by the white tigers of the Cincinnati Zoo and the giant pandas of the Wolong National Nature Reserve.
"Each species is a masterpiece, a creation made with extreme care and genius."
-Edward O. Wilson-
Already at the beginning of the 21st century, the zoo underwent a remodeling which resulted in the construction of new facilities, such as a wildlife research center, and the renovation of existing ones. Therefore, the efficiency of the place increased even more until it became what it is today: a world reference zoo.White Tiger
The zoo that occupies us extends over 26 hectares of land and It houses more than 3,600 animals of about 400 different species. Some of the most characteristic are white tigers, white rhinos, as well as an impressive collection of primates.
